Papaya (Paw Paw) Fruit

First used in Mayan medicine, papayas have beautiful yellow-orange flesh and are packed with carotenoids, helpful for many diseases. Also known as “pawpaw”, papaya can be eaten ripe as a succulent fresh fruit or cooked in curries and stews in its unripe green state.

Papaya comes out on top in the antioxidant stakes, with half an average fruit providing a whopping 38 milligrams of powerful carotenoids. It can thus help to protect against cancer and cardiovascular disease and to treat skin irritations. Papaya contains protease enzymes, such as papain, which are similar to those present in the stomach, therefore favoring healthy digestion.

The enzymes also reduce inflammation in the body, and so maybe beneficial in easing joint pain from conditions such as arthritis and sports injuries. Used topically, papain literally digests dead skin cells and acts as a mild exfoliate. It is also said to aid the healing of skin sores.

The fruit is a mild diuretic, and is particularly useful in treating children’s urinary and digestive ailments, while its edible seeds have been used to treat stomach aches and fungal infections. Papaya is an excellent source of Vitamin C. As well as supporting the immune system,   this antioxidant prevents the build-up of plaque in blood vessels.

Papaya is rich in fiber, which lowers cholesterol levels and helps to prevent colon cancer by binding with toxins.

Easy papaya Recipes

PAPAYA EXFOLIATING LOTION

(To brighten and rejuvenate the “skin”)

  • 1 large fresh papaya
  • Piece of muslin
  • 1 cup chamomile infusion, cooled

Peel the papaya, remove the seeds and puree the flesh in a blender. Press the puree through a piece of muslin to extract all the juice. Mix the juice with an equal amount of chamomile infusion, and stir well. Using cotton wool balls, apply the lotion to the face and neck, avoiding contact with the eyes. Leave for about 10 minutes, then rinse off. Keeps in the fridge for up to 2 days.

THAI-STYLE SALAD

  • 2 papayas, peeled and deseeded
  • 1 red pepper, deseeded
  • 8 spring onions, trimmed and chopped
  • 100g/ 3 ½ oz/ 2 cups bean sprouts
  • 1 large handful mint, chopped
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • I tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce

Dice the papaya(pawpaw) and the red pepper into 1cm/ ½ in cubes. Toss all the ingredients in a large bowl, mixing well, and serve.
