Thought to have originated in China, buckwheat spread to northern Europe and Russia in the fourteenth century.
In spite of its name, buckwheat is not related to wheat and is suitable for those on a wheat or gluten free diet.
Buckwheat’s main asset is its rutin, a bioflavonoid compound that helps to strengthen weakened blood capillaries, thus preventing the formation of thread veins.
In turn, the strenthening of capillaries may improve circulatory problems such as chilblains and high blood pressure.
Buckwheat also appears to aid the management of diabetes and glucose intolerance by controlling blood-sugar balance through the action of a substance called D-chiro-inositol.
Buckwheat contains fibre and all eight essential amino acids, and is a good source of protein for the brain. Rich in magnesium, which is vital for bone health, the grain also contains several B-vitamins, which help to maintain the nervous system.
It also lowers blood cholesterol levels. Buckwheat is today widely consumed in Eastern Europe, especially in Poland and Russia, where it features in many traditional dishes.

- 200g/ 7oz/ 2 ½ cups buckwheat flakes
- 100g/ 3 ½ oz/ ¾ cup oats
- 50g/ 1¾ oz/ ½ cup sunflower seeds
- 50g/ 1¾ oz/ 1 cup dried apricots
- 50g/ 1¾ oz/ ⅓ cup raisins
