Barley

Used by the ancient Romans as a strengthening food, barley is the oldest cultivated cereal. Today, it is largely neglected, but it has amazing nutritional properties. With its unique ability to act on the mucous membranes, barley may help to soothe inflammatory conditions of the intestines and the urinary tract.

The grain is rich in minerals, with high levels of calcium and potassium and plenty of B-complex vitamins, making it useful for people suffering from stress or fatigue. It also contains beta-glucan, a gummy fiber that has dramatic cholesterol-lowering abilities.

Barley Nutrients is one of the richest sources of the antioxidant tocotrienol, which studies have shown to be even more potent than some forms of vitamin E in preventing heart disease. It works in two ways. First, it helps to stop free radical oxidation, a process that makes “bad” cholesterol stick to artery walls. And second, it acts on the liver to reduce cholesterol production.

The grain also contains lignans, which help to prevent blood clots from forming,  further reducing the risk of heart disease. In addition, barley is exceptionally high in vitamin E, which keeps the skin and hair healthy and young-looking, and selenium, which is especially effective in fighting viral infections.
